How to Ground Illustrated Visualization

Learn when to ground and what the practice offers. Below, I will give three guided walk-throughs that vary in length from short and quick to long and thorough including my fully illustrated guide! At the end I will discuss some grounding activities.

Grounding is one of the fundamental practices of an energy aware spiritual lifestyle. It helps you stay balanced, let go of old or unwanted energy, and connect with Mother Earth strengthening that important bond.

Understanding Mother Earth

Earth is an embodiment of the Divine mother. It is the only planet we have observed capable of supporting life. Mother Earth is constantly balancing extremes and creates a hospitable shelter which provides the stability for life. Within Her she holds immense power and energy. She is naturally a strong ally for us, who we can always turn to for support. When we do spiritual work, it is a good idea to learn to work with Her. With the practice of grounding, form a strong connection with the Earth creating a reciprocal energy relationship. Offer your excess, dense energy, to be filtered and recycled in the powerful energies of the Earth’s molten center. With love Earth sends you pure, nourishing energy from Her powerful core. Accept this blessing with gratitude.

We can reflect on Her physical features and functions to learn the energetic and spiritual parallels that she supports us with.

The Physical and Spiritual Nature of Earth:

  • Mother Earth receives old, dense energy from us, and recycles it into fresh, vital energy

  • Emotionally and energetically when we feel a storm begin to surge, we can turn to Her as our ally to return back to our center.

  • Much like a caring Mother her loves and provides warmth and nourishment for her children.

  • The ecosystems She houses distribute energy and biomass throughout the food web

  • Earth’s gravity holds all the matter together to form a stable planet which we are safely anchored to.

  • Our planet is warmed by Her molten interior, and nourished by the metals and minerals

When To Ground (examples)

When You Feel:

  • Stagnant

  • Overwhelmed

  • Out of Place

  • Heavy, dense energy, feeling weighed down

  • Hyper, overactive physically/mentally

  • Tired

  • Stressed

The Benefits of a Grounding Practice:

  • A spiritual connection with Mother Earth

  • Energetic Protection

  • Guidance

  • Energy Awareness

  • Improved Health

  • Help centering yourself/balance

Learn Energy Awareness:

Learn awareness of your internal environment and stay in-tune with your body and energetic climate. The practice of grounding helps expand that awareness. You learn what it feels like when old, dense energy leaves you, and how that unhelpful energy feels in your body. It becomes more and more obvious when something that doesn’t belong is present. For example, when a pool is clear that one floating leaf becomes painfully obvious.

When To Ground:

When you feel out of sorts, hyper active, unsettled, or out of place it is time to remember your stable connection with Mother Earth. You can practice this more formally and really sink into the guided visualization below, or with practice you can do it on the go, as you’re going for a walk or even washing the dishes, imagine your roots going down to connect with the Earth and create an energy exchange. Just make sure you are safe, that you are not driving/operating machinery, that you won’t be intruded upon, and not doing something in which you need to be alert, such as crossing the street.

A Matter of Second Nature:

As you become more familiar with the energetic exchange, and building your connection with mother Earth, you groove in the energetic pathways and it may just take a moment, such as the following.

Quick Grounding Check In:

  1. Settle yourself and intend the connection with the Earth.

  2. Become aware of your body and begin the downward flow and release of excess energy.

  3. Experience the return of clean empowering energy flow through you and shield you.

  4. :)

From time to time it is still important to take a moment and practice the more complete visualization, in order to assure a proper connection.

Medium Length

Illustrated Grounding Walk-through:

Take a deep breath, settle into the intention to begin grounding.

Open your root chakra like a funnel downwards to the Earth.

Visualize roots from the base of your spine and the bottoms of your feet going down into the Earth.

Witness them travel through the layers of the Earth down until they wrap around the Earth’s core.

Scan yourself for any energy that is ready to be released.

Send it down through your roots to Mother Earth.

Mother Earth reciprocates, and sends you pure, blessed energy as silvery-white light.

See it rise back through your connection up your spine, until it floods your heart space.

Feel the light expand out from your heart space blessing and healing you as it fills every inch of your body.

It then expands out into your aura, and out to completely surround you forming an impenetrable silver shield around you.

Offer your appreciation to Mother Earth for this healing and protection. Take a moment to come back to this present moment, and see if you notice any differences in how you feel.

Most Thorough Grounding Possible:

Below is the most thorough walk-through I can imagine. Please don’t be scared away! This long version is meant to be used as a reference, a first time launch, or as the occasional deep work reset. I hope this will cover various thoughts or questions you might have, and set the tone, guiding your intention and approach as you move forward with quicker grounding sessions. However, if there is anything that is still unclear, please comment and tell me, and I will do my best to clarify.

Thorough Walk-Through:

Begin when you are comfortable and safe where there will not be interruption.

  • Take a deep breath settling into your body, holding the intention to begin this sacred work.

Feel supported by the Earth Beneath you, know that you are firmly held by rich soil on sturdy layers of rock.

  • Imagine the red Root Chakra at the base of the spine.

Intend that your Root Chakra relaxes, opening downward like a funnel allowing for the smooth transfer of energy and embracing Earth’s the energies.

  • Imagine roots extending from the base of your spine, and your feet down into the Earth.

Witness them travel down through the soil, through the crust, the layers of the mantle, red, orange, yellow, as the warmth and energy intensifies.

Finally, greet the sacred center of the Earth’s core shining with incredible holy, loving light and warmth.

Firmly embrace this holy center with your roots wrapping around the Earth’s core.

  • Bring your awareness to your body, scanning through yourself internally for any heavy feelings, discomfort, pain, hyper or excess energy, anything you are ready to release at this time.

Send it as an offering to Mother Earth, with her wisdom and refinement she receives it as a resource to be recycled and used to nourish the planet.

  • With love Earth sends you pure, nourishing energy from her powerful core. Accept this blessing with gratitude.

Watch as silvery white light travels upward like a pillar through the connection you have created with Her.

  • Up into your body, traveling up through the spine, all the way to your Heart Chakra.

Feel it fill your Heart entirely as this shining silvery light pours out.

  • The light expands out past your Heart. It eagerly fills in any vacancy left before when you released energy. This light blesses, warms, and heals everything it touches. Completely filling every corner of your body with light.

The light expands out past your auric field completely enveloping and protecting you as a silver impenetrable shield. Offer appreciation for Mother Earth and your guides, you are now protected and grounded.

Closing:

Thank you for following this guide! I hope you feel more confident grounding and that it brought you a deeper understanding of its importance and purpose. This is something that is good to incorporate into a daily practice, or at least from time to time when you notice the need. All humans have an energy body and we need to care for it. Let me know if you have any questions!

Please remember that grounding alone is not the answer, and healing requires physical and mental work as well. The issues discussed in this article may overlap with symptoms requiring professional medical attention, and that should not be delayed. Internal work is best done while supported by a therapist. It is important to see a doctor and a therapist as needed.
